At St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic School (SVFS), we are committed to providing students with a challenging and comprehensive education. Our Advancement Math Curriculum, led by Mr. Gary Salvadori, is designed to push students beyond the standard grade-level curriculum, equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary for success in higher-level math courses.
Understanding the Difference: Regular Math vs. Advanced Math
6th Grade: Building a Strong Foundation
Both Regular and Advanced Math classes in 6th grade cover the same essential standards. However, the Advanced Math class goes a step further by extending beyond the basics to prepare students for the more rigorous curriculum they will encounter in 7th grade. This early introduction to advanced concepts helps lay a solid foundation for future math success.
7th Grade: Expanding Horizons
In 7th grade, the Regular Math class focuses on mastering the 7th-grade standards. In contrast, the Advanced Math class tackles both 7th and 8th-grade standards, setting students up for success in Algebra during their 8th-grade year. This dual-grade curriculum challenges students to think critically and develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.
8th Grade: A High School Head Start
By 8th grade, the distinction becomes even more pronounced. While Regular Math continues to cover 8th-grade standards, the Advanced Math class is dedicated to studying Algebra 1—a course typically reserved for high school freshmen. This accelerated program gives students a head start, allowing them to enter high school with a strong mathematical foundation.
Selection Process for Advanced Math
Students are selected for the Advanced Math program through placement tests administered by the SVFS curriculum. Both 6th and 7th graders take these tests, and their scores determine whether they will follow the Regular or Advanced Math curriculum. Typically, students who excel in 7th-grade Advanced Math are promoted to Algebra in 8th grade.
High School Readiness
One of the key benefits of the Advanced Math program at SVFS is the opportunity for students to enter high school with advanced placement in math courses. Many of our Advanced Math students qualify for Geometry as freshmen, with some years seeing the majority of students placed in this advanced course. This placement reflects the strong preparation they receive in our program.
